On The Writing Of Intellectuals In Shen Congwen’s Novels

As a writer and a member of intellectuals,Shen Congwen’s understanding of the intelligentsia is a dynamic process.From watching from the edge to sticking to the center,Shen Congwen’s understanding of intellectuals has gradually deepened,and his novel creation of intellectuals has also been more complicated.With the development of his creative practice,Shen Congwen enriched and developed the series of images of intellectuals,who in Shen Congwen’s works showed the multiple personality and ideological character of the group.The different writing tendencies of intellectuals in different periods show Shen Congwen’s ideological process of understanding intellectuals.Combining Shen Congwen’s life and his novels,we can judge his cognition of the role of intellectuals,grasp his complex emotions of the intellectual community,and understand his expectation and construction of the ideal images of intellectuals,and see Shen Congwen’s anxiety about the disintegration of the intellectuals’ sense of social responsibility in the early stage of modernization.This paper focuses on the image of intellectuals in Shen Congwen’s novels to explore Shen Congwen’s cognition of the group of intellectuals and its changes.The first chapter examines the narrative features of Shen Congwen’s intellectual writing strategies,and explores Shen Congwen’s critique of intellectuals from the standpoint of military men and marginal intellectuals,and the observation of intellectuals from the perspective of women in Western Hunan.The second chapter and the third chapter analyze Shen Congwen’s understanding of intellectuals in stages based on his specific works.The second chapter analyzes how Shen Congwen’s intellectual identity and the imagination of ideal humanity are embodied in the text of the novel,showing Shen Congwen’s attempt to shape ideal humanity.The third chapter focuses on Shen Congwen’s affirmation,reflection and persistence of the intellectual path in different stages of life and career,and understands Shen Congwen’s reflection on the value of intellectual identity.The fourth chapter explains Shen Congwen’s diachronic cognitive changes of intellectuals and the causes of their formation in stages,combining the historical facts,the current situation of the literary world and Shen Congwen’s unique life experience to analyze.The fifth chapter discusses the historical significance of literature depicted by Shen Congwen’s intellectual group,pointing out that Shen Congwen’s writing of intellectuals enrich the series of images of intellectuals in modern literature,reflects Shen Congwen’s concern and reflection on the modern educational system,and shows Shen Congwen’s adherence to the intellectual rational spirit.
