This essay examines the positive impact of cultural hybridization on traditional Chinese painting and my painting practice in terms of the similarities between traditional Chinese painting and the spiritual core of Expressionism. The first chapter briefly outlines the concept and characteristics of Expressionism and uses the paintings of Edvard Munch as an example to illustrate the most prominent features of Expressionist painting. The second chapter compares and analyses the’interchangeability’ and ’empathy’ between the two in several ways, taking as an example the introduction of Expressionism to China at the beginning of the twentieth century with the tide of social change, which, against this historical background, caused a huge cultural impact and subsequently gave rise to the new face of contemporary Chinese ink painting.Undeniably, its spiritual core, recorded as early as 800 years ago in the Song Dynasty, has been preserved. To this day there are many contemporary painters who have continued this development, and their paintings mark a new look for Chinese ink painting. And with the infusion of fresh elements,Chinese painting is no longer an impression of the old but has taken on more forms of expression and methods of painting. It is a long history, and through the efforts and perseverance of generations of outstanding Chinese artists,we have not stopped looking for developments and opportunities in Chinese painting to this day. This cultural hybridization means that with globalization, the world’s cultural doors are opening, thus bringing new opportunities and new paths of development for traditional Chinese painting. The third part of the essay talks about my personal creative practice, broadly interpreting my personal experiments and reflections on the subject in a way that records the creative process and critical reflections. In my research,I studied both Chinese and Western artists, learning about their subject matter and methods of painting. There were also many reflections and additions to the creative process.I have recorded in this paper a few of the more important artists for my study and their interpretations of their work, broadly divided into two areas, one on the materials used in the paintings and the other on the way the paintings convey inner thoughts or cathartic emotions to the viewer. |
