A Study Of Unusual Collocation In The Uyghur Translation Of Mo Yan’s Novel The Thirteenth Step

Unusual collocation refers to the deliberate violation of conventional and fixed collocation rules for the sake of artistic expression,as well as the unconventional combination of words,sentence components and clauses,so that the combined words and phrases exhibit unique characteristics and produce peculiar literary effects.It belongs to the category of pragmatics essentially.Mo Yan’s novel The thirteenth Step uses the writing technique of unusual collocation to fully convey the style of magical realism.The thirteenth Step is a lengthy novel published in 1988,which represents the realities of life while pursuing the highest degree of narrative perfection.Mr.Yasen Seyiti brings forth the fundamental creative merit of The thirteenth Step through his translation of the original work.As a recurring literary element in Mo Yan’s work,its ludicrous portrayal approach is one of the critical things that translators must bear in mind.This paper extracts unusual collocation from The thirteenth Step’original text,compares them in Chinese and Uyghur,creates a corpus of a certain size,and summarizes the principles,strategies,methods and techniques of translation used in the Uyghur translation.Also,a translation aesthetic is established around the concept of unusual collocation in order to contribute to the cause of Chinese minority language translation.This paper is divided into five chapters,each of which addresses one of the following major points.The introduction chapter discusses the research purpose and significance,provides an overview of the current state of research on novel translation and unusual collocation,summarizes the research methods and innovations used in this paper,provides background information on the novel thirteenth Step and the translator,and conducts a statistical analysis and classification of unusual collocation in novels.The main body is divided into four chapter.Based on the Chinese-Uyghur corpus comparison,Chapter One summarizes the translation properties of thirteenth Step’unusual collocations,including smooth interlingual conversion,translation pluralism and compatibility,and semantic dynamic reciprocity.Chapter Two analyzes the novel thirteenth Step’s principles and strategies using the corpus,and discusses the novel’s translation principles from two perspectives of translation aesthetics and pragmatics,namely the Three Beauty Theory and the Three Transformations Theory.It focuses on the use of form,meaning,sound,equivalence,shallowing and deepening in translation,and on the“naturalization”and“dissimilation” strategies for the novel.The novel adopts naturalization primarily and dissimilated content secondly embodying cultural characteristics.Chapter Three summarizes the methods and techniques used to translate Thirteen Steps based on an analysis of the corpus of Uyghur translations.It is discovered that,due to the complexity of the literary language such as unusual collocation,the methods and techniques used to translate are also diverse,with six translation methods and six translation techniques.Chapter Four examines the translation issues surrounding the unusual collocation in The thirteenth Step,the primary issues being context neglect,a lack of information,and a weakening of the style.It also proposes optimization strategies for ensuring context relevance,retain the key information of the original text and preserving the style of the original work in response to the aforementioned issues.In the conclusion part,the author summarizes the whole thesis and forms his own academic views,hoping to provide some reference and help for the future research of chinese-uygur translation.
