Expressionist painting with its unique artistic style in the history of western modern art left a heavy brush brush.During my postgraduate study, the author was deeply attracted by the paintings of Marlene Dumas,a master of expressionism. In his artistic creation,a large number of water-based materials were used to present the concept of painting, which endowed his works with strong expressiveness and spirit. The main task of this study is to discuss the value of water-based material language in expressionist painting and the influence of form and concept expression in Marlene Dumas’ s water-based material painting on her own creation.Based on the background and characteristics analysis of expressionist painting and water-based painting, this paper aims to explore the advantages of the combination of the two. Then, taking Marlene Dumas,an artist who perfectly integrates the two,as an example, this paper analyzes her painting forms and concept expression in the way of case study, and applies what she thinks into her own painting creation. This paper is divided into four parts to study the application of "expressionism" in water-based materials. The first part is to sort out the development of expressionist painting and water-based painting by sorting out the literature. The second part is the value of the combination of the two, which can be directly expressed as the work is not replicable and conducive to the expression of emotion; The third part is the case analysis of Marlene Dumas’ s water-based paintings, through listing the works of this great expressionist artist to do a detailed interpretation; The fourth part is the influence and inspiration of the above research on my graduation creation.
