Gu Kaizhi in the Eastern Jin Dynasty had great achievements in painting theory and painting techniques, especially his "theory of vividness",which had a profound impact on the later development of Chinese painting, especially figure painting. The article is divided into three parts. The first part starts with the historical origin of the "transmission theory" and analyzes politics, artistic style, and metaphysics to introduce the aesthetic concept of "transmission theory".The second part analyzes the "form" and "spirit" in Gu Kaizhi’s representative works, and concludes that the "transmission theory" is highly refined from practice and creation. The third part first elaborates on the significant significance of Gu Kaizhi’s "transmission theory" in the development of Chinese art history.Secondly,it is necessary to strengthen one’s own understanding of the theory of "transmission" and apply the opposition and unity of "form" and "spirit" to one’s own creative practice. From Gu Kaizhi’s proposal of the "transmission theory" aesthetic ideology until contemporary times, the research on the relationship between "form" and "spirit" in Chinese painting has never stopped, continuously inheriting and developing it,injecting infinite power into contemporary Chinese painting.
