A Report On E-C Subtitle Translation Of The Journeys With Simon Reeve(Excerpts) Governed By Translation Norms

Under the tide of globalization,film and television works,as a direct and effective form of cultural transmission,have deepened the exchanges and communication among people of all countries.In this process,due to language differences,subtitle translation plays an important role in information spreading.Guided by translation norms of Toury and Chesterman,the report selects the documentary series The Journeys with Simon Reeve broadcast on BBC as the translation material to explore translation methods of documentaries.In the translation practice,the author finds that the difficulties in subtitling mainly include: how to express the documentary succinctly and clearly in limited time and space;how to better realize the synchronization between subtitles and visual content in order to accurately convey the foreign culture involved in the source language;and how to take into account the differences between Chinese and English language expression,be faithful to the source language and truthfully convey the film information.Aiming at the above difficulties,the author employs different translation methods.Governed by technical norms of space and time,the author mainly adopts the translation methods of division and simplification.Division gets rid of the difference in sentence segmentation between the source language and the target language.Simplification solves the problem of incomplete information expression due to spatial limitation.Constrained by contextual norms,the author employs specification and adaptation.Specification better displays the information of the pictures.Adaptation addresses the translation of specific cultural idioms or slang.Restricted by linguistic norms,inversion and omission are mainly used.Inversion makes the semantic of the translated text smooth and reproduces the logical structure of the source language.Omission reduces the number of words in subtitles and highlights the focus of the speaker.Based on subtitle translation of the documentary,this report analyzes some feasible translation methods and skills under the governance of translation norms,in order to provide some useful reference for subtitle translation in the future.Meanwhile,it is expected that other translators take norm theory as the starting point to improve the quality of subtitle translation about documentaries.
