Abstract/Summary:
System justification is the psychological process of legitimizing existing social institutions and social arrangements.Numerous previous studies have found that system justification is negatively related to system-challenging collective action. However, previous studies have not distinguished the difference between different "system" justifications, and most of the collective actions involved are system-challenging,while less attention has been paid to system-supporting collective actions.China’s development requires a stable environment, especially the stability of the central system. Therefore, this study focuses on the collective action of supporting the central system, with a view to promoting China’s harmonious and stable development. This study takes into account the characteristics of China’s political system and divides system justification into two levels: central and local. On this basis,it focuses on the relationship between two different types of system justification and central system-supporting collective action, and refines the model according to the classification of collective action to support the system(conflict-based vs.construction-based),while examining the underlying psychological mechanisms from the perspective of hope. This study contains three sub-studies: Study 1(n=199)focuses on collective action in conflict-oriented maintenance central systems, and used a questionnaire method to establish the relationship between system justification(central and local)and collective action participation in conflict-oriented maintenance central systems and the mediating role of equality-oriented hope and harmony-oriented hope.Study 2(n=197)focused on collective action in construction-oriented maintenance systems, and developed a model of system justification(central and local)affecting collective action participation in construction-oriented maintenance systems.Study 3(n=141)again explored the effect of system justification(central and local)on collective action participation in construction-oriented maintenance systems through a different research context.Findings revealed that(1)subjects’ self-reported levels of central system justification were significantly higher than local system justification;(2)central system justification was a significant predictor for collective action in conflict-based maintenance systems, and local system justification was a significant predictor for collective action in construction-based maintenance systems;and(3)equality-focused hope mediates between central system justification and collective action of conflict-oriented maintenance systems;(4)harmony-focused hope mediates between local system justification and collective action of construction-oriented maintenance systems. This study enriches the study of collective action participation in supporting systems and the understanding of the different roles of different types of hope from different levels of system justification, and at the same time helps to provide new ideas and theoretical support for the management and governance of central and local governments to promote the harmonious and stable development of society.
