| England in the Age of Austen,a historical text written by British historian Jeremy Black,introduces the development of English society at all levels from the late 18 th century to the early 19 th century.Serious as it is,it also has some literary features since it focuses on Austen and her literary works.It contains many historical terms,long and difficult sentences with complex grammatical structures,as well as a large number of original works which are quoted directly or indirectly.All of these lead to translating challenges in terms of understanding vocabulary,organizing logic,and reproducing the style of the original text.In this report,Chapter 9 and Chapter 12 are selected as cases and Chesterman’s theory of translation norms as guiding theory.Chesterman’s translations norms and translation strategies set higher requirements for translation quality and translators’ behaviors.Such strategies as transposition,hyponymy and cultural filtering have been utilized to analyze specific translation examples.It proves that the author’s choice of translation strategies meets the requirements of translation norms.Also the author further realizes that the theory of Chesterman’s translation norms is a practical guide for the translation of historical texts,which can help solve translation difficulties,improve the readability of translated texts,optimize the communication effect of translations,as well as ensure the rigor and literary quality of historical texts to meet readers’ expectations. |
