The Perspective Of Genre Toward The Discussion Of Serial Verb In Modern Chinese Language

Previous definitions of the serial verb:two or more predicate words are used together,each of which can have a subject-verb relationship with the same subject,and there are no phonetic pauses between predicate words and no related words.Based on the theory of event semantics and cognitive linguistics,this paper aims to makes a systematic study of the serial verbs on modern Chinese procedural and dialogue genre.From a formal point of view,the serial verb is composed of two or more verb structures sharing the same subject,which is independent.And from the Semantically,a compound event is represented by two or more sub-events,which is cohesive.From the perspective of discourse function,the serial verb is cohesive and self-sufficient.The independence of serial verbs is mainly reflected in the following aspects: each verb structure of serial verbs can have its own independent tense aspect mark,negative mark,adverbials and objects.Serial Verb ‘s VP1 always appears in a bounded form.In the procedural genre,the verb structure of serial verb has more secondary components,and in the dialogue genre,the serial verb has more tense and aspect markers.From the perspective of event semantics,the cohesion of linkage shows that there are logical semantic relations,time relations and role sharing relations among sub-events.In the procedural genre,the time relationship is the bonding means,and in the dialogue genre,the semantic relationship of events is the bonding means.Serial Verb expression is a compound event composed of two or more sub-events in chronological order.Timeliness is an important feature of serial verb expression,which is reflected in the interdependence of actions in time.Semantically,spatiality is reflected in the displacement between actions.From the perspective toward discourse function,the serial verb in the dialogue genre is self-sufficient and the serial form in the procedural genre is cohesive: the procedural genre pays attention to the procedural object and procedural steps,and the agent is suppressed,which is very descriptive,while the serial verb entering the discourse environment shows corresponding characteristics in the use of objects.Generally,the serial verb highlights that the action subject has made a series of actions,and the objects of the serial verb can appear or not,and the objects of the serial form basically appear in the procedural genre.Dialogue genre pays attention to the subject of action,which is declarative and narrative.In this context,the serial verb has strong discourse self-sufficiency and weak connection with the preceding and following sentences.
