| As the sinicisation of Indian Buddhist thought, the Three Treatises School is one of the earliest schools of Chinese Buddhism. It got its name because it regards Nagarjuna’s Madhymika-sastra,Dvadashamukha-sastra and Deva’s Sata-sastra as the classics of the school. The thoughts of the Three Treatises School are very speculative and have a unique insight into the origin of the world and the development regulars of things. These thoughts also play a guiding role in understanding music. Therefore, based on the main classical texts, this thesis uses the relevant thoughts of the Three Treatises School to observe the musical phenomena, and tries to explore the music aesthetic ideas. The Madhyamaka thought of Indian Nagarjuna is the ideological origin of the Three Treatises School, which was introduced into China by Kumarajiva. After three stages of development: Guanhe,Sheshan, and Jiaxiang, the Three Treatises School was officially founded by Chi-tsang.The Madhyamaka thought is a complex system, the main ideas of which are pratityasamutpada and sunyata, samvrti and paramartha-satyas and Madhyamaka thought. These ideas are also the basis for constructing the logical framework of this thesis. This thesis explores the existence and essence of music based on the pratityasamutpada and sunyata theory. The Three Treatises School think that people have Ignorance cognition in the process of music aesthetic appreciation, that is,a secular understanding that does not understand Buddhism. This Ignorance includes the attachment to the independent existence of music objects and aesthetic subjects. In order to break this Ignorance cognition, the Three Treatises School put forward the idea of Origin, which means that things are born from various factors. The formation and perception of music both depend on the interaction between objective matter and subjective consciousness. It is because music is a phenomenon of Origin that music has no constant entity, that is,no self, which is called Emptiness. The Two Truths theory refers to the Conventional Truth(secular truth)and the Ultimate Truth(true truth). The secular truth is pratityasamutpada and sunyata, which is the truth at the secular level. The true truth is Eight Negations and Middle(also called reality),which is the truth at the Buddhist level.Without the secular truth,it is impossible to prove the true truth, and the connotation of the true truth needs to be explained through the pseudonym of the secular truth.Through the interpretation of the theory of the Eight Negations and Middle, this thesis further analyzes the connotation of Emptiness from the perspective of the true truth. The phenomenon is not real because of Origin, and the concepts of “born, die, unity, and difference” are just names. Therefore, what the reality of music is the sound neither dying nor being born, and the relationship between sound and heart neither identical nor different. Finally, based on the characteristics of reality, this thesis proposes to practice the music aesthetic through the Middle Way. |
