Refutation Of Grāha:A Buddhist Study Of Hui Zhao’s Cheng Wei Shi Lun Liao Yi Deng

The fundamental argument of theory of vij?ana-only is that “vij?apti-mātratā-anartha”.In order to explore the ālaya-vij?āna that is the foundation of all dharma,refutation of grāha is a necessary prerequisite,which is also a threshold that must be crossed by the study of the theory of vij?ana-only.The book Cheng Wei Shi Lun Liao Yi Deng by Hui Zhao who is the third leader in Weishi Sect is known as one of the“Three Classic Annotation of Cheng Wei Shi Lun”,however,few scholars have paid attention to it.So this paper based on Cheng Wei Shi Lun Liao Yi Deng is written to analysis Hui Zhao’s inheritance and development for the refutation of grāha.As for the ātma-grāha,Hui Zhao refuted “puru(?)a” of Sā(?)khya and “ātman” of Vai?e(?)ika at first,“ajīva” of Jaina and “paramā?u” of Pā?upata secondly.And then he refuted three types of ātma-grāha on the basis of the relationship between ātma and skandha.While refuting dharma-grāha in other religions,Hui Zhao also took Pā?upata and Sā(?)khya as examples,then pointed out the theoretical defects in each type of dharma-grāha according to relationship between “skandha-only” and “existence-only”.The Sarvāsti-vādin’s dharma-grāha is the most typical in Hinayana Buddhism.The paper will refute it on it’s “rūpa-dharma”,“citta-viprayukta-sa(?)skāra” and “asa(?)sk(?)tadharma” one by one.In addition,analyzing the two kinds of grāha by “sahaja” and“vikalpa”,we can find that both of them are spurious ideas in Mano-vij?ana or Manas.On the basis of inheriting the views of predecessors,Hui Zhao’s Cheng Wei Shi Lun Liao Yi Deng incorporates his own understanding and ideas.Interpreting his ideology about refutation of grāha thoroughly is conducive to the further development and improvement for contemporary study of vij?ana-only.
