In interpersonal interactions among college students,offense is inevitable,and when offense occurs,forgiveness can alleviate interpersonal conflicts,resolve conflicts,and build harmonious interpersonal relationships,which promoting the level of mental health of college students,so it is important to promote forgiveness among college students after offending.The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of zhongyong thinking and intimacy on forgiveness at different levels of offense,and this study was conducted using two methods,the questionnaire method and the experimental method.The study was divided into two parts:Study 1 used a 2(offense severity: moderate/severe)× 2(zhongyong thinking: high/ low)× 2(relationship: intimate/general)between-subjects experimental design,with the independent variables being offense severity,zhognyong thinking,and relationship,and the dependent variable being the level of explicit forgiveness.A total of 168 undergraduate subjects were enrolled.The results of the study found that(1)the offense severity affects the level of explicit forgiveness,and the explicit forgiveness score of the slightly offended group is higher than the explicit forgiveness score of the severely offended group;(2)zhongyong thinking affects the level of explicit forgiveness,and the explicit l forgiveness score of the high zhongyong thinking group is higher than the explicit forgiveness score of the low zhongyong thinking group;(3)intimate relationship affects the level of explicit forgiveness,higher scores for explicit forgiveness in the intimate relationship group than in the general relationship group;(4)the offense severity,zhongyong thinking,and intimacy relationship have a common effect on explicit forgiveness;for the intimacy group,the level of forgiveness of individuals with low zhongyong thinking is lower than the level of forgiveness of individuals with high zhongyong thinking at the level of slight offense,while for the general relationship group,there was no difference in the level of explicit forgiveness of subjects with high and low zhongyong thinking.There was no difference in the level of forgiveness between high and low zhongyong thinking subjects in the general relationship group and in the intimate relationship group at the level of severe offense;The level of forgiveness in study 1 was measured by a scale,which may have a social approval effect,so study 2 used an implicit association test to measure the level of implicit forgiveness in the subjects.Study 2 used the same offense story as Study 1,and still used 2(offense severity: moderate/severe)× 2(zhongyong thinking: high/low)× 2(relationship:intimate/general)between-subjects experimental design.A total of 160 undergraduate subjects were enrolled.The results of the study found that(1)there is no significant difference in the level of implicit forgiveness;(2)there is no difference in the level of implicit forgiveness;(3)there is no difference in the level of implicit forgiveness;(4)the offense severity,zhongyong thinking,and intimacy relationship haven’t a common effect on explicit forgiveness(5)the explicit forgiveness scores and the implicit forgiveness scores have significant differences.This study shows that zhongyong thinking and intimate relationships affect college students’ forgiveness at different levels of offense.The results not only enrich the research on zhongyong thinking and college students’ forgiveness at the empirical level,but also provide insights and directions for interventions on college students’ forgiveness.
