In the past three decades,contemporary meticulous figure painting has rapidly developed,and the concept of "new meticulous" has emerged.A group of new and avant-garde meticulous artists have appeared,such as Zheng Qingyu,Zhang Jian,Shen Ning,Xu Hualing,and Lei Miao.These avant-garde painters have created and inherited traditional meticulous painting through contemporary concepts,materials,techniques,and knowledge.This article will focus on analyzing the use of gray tone in Zheng Qingyu’s artwork.Through reading and appreciation of the works,it is easy to discover that the new meticulous painters have also made new attempts and transformations in the traditional color aesthetics of meticulous figure painting.They break free from the colorful and bright meticulous paintings,and present new meticulous figure paintings with gray tone as the main tone.This is a bold attempt by this group of meticulous painters,and this style’s rapid rise has resonated greatly with viewers.New meticulous painters seek a breakthrough in color and go beyond people’s visual inertia in color,excluding the inherent color interference of real objects.They subjectivize their consciousness to recreate colors,condensing the conceptual and expressive aspects of art,and presenting a new era of color aesthetics.Gray tone also carries the painter’s inner emotional world,and its subtle changes make the work more intriguing.The first chapter of this article starts with the definition of "new meticulous" and discusses the use of gray tone language in "new meticulous" figure painting,clarifying the reasons for the gray tone trend in new meticulous figure painting.The second chapter analyzes the expression and emotional characteristics of gray tone in the works of Zheng Qingyu,a representative of new meticulous figure painters,and how he breaks through traditional color to make the tone of the work tend towards gray,conveying an ambiguous emotional atmosphere in the painting.In the third chapter,the author finds color inspiration that can be learned and borrowed from Zheng Qingyu’s paintings for their own creation,and records the creative process combined with their own practice.Finally,the fourth chapter summarizes the inspiration of gray tone in Zheng Qingyu’s works on the author’s artistic concept and reflects on the weakening of lines in gray tone.
