Reading is one of the critical input skills among the five crucial language skills of listening,speaking,reading,viewing and writing.Strengthening reading teaching to cultivate and improve students’ reading ability is essential to high school reading teaching.With the reform of new curriculum standards,how to combine advanced teaching theories and teaching models with real classrooms to improve the quality of reading classrooms is a great concern for scholars.This study attempts to apply the Scaffolding Instruction Model in high school English reading to improve students’ English reading performance and enhance their comprehensive reading ability.In this study,two classes from the senior class of Cheng Cheng Zhuo Ren Senior High School in Xinxiang City were selected as the study subjects.Class One is the experimental class,and Class Two is the control class.The before-and-after comparison between the experimental and control classes regarding reading scores and questionnaire results was used as testing data.The writer tries to answer three research questions based on the data analysis and interview results.1.What are the present problems of English reading teaching and learning problems in Xinxiang Cheng Cheng Zhuo Ren Senior High School? 2.How can English teachers apply SIM to English reading teaching in Xinxiang Cheng Cheng Zhuo Ren Senior High School?3.What effects does the SIM have on students’ English reading scores and interests in Xinxiang Cheng Cheng Zhuo Ren Senior High School?For the completion of this applied research,this study started in September 2022.Two parallel classes of students in the first year of high school were used as the experimental research subjects in Cheng Cheng Zhuo Ren Senior School,Xinxiang City,Henan Province,for 12 weeks.This study used tests,questionnaires,and interviews.Reviewing the literature,the author learned about the research on Scaffolding Instruction at home and abroad and theories related to Scaffolding Instruction.Two classes’ reading scores and questionnaire results before and after the experiment were used as experimental data.SPSS 25 was used to analyze the data,expecting to provide valuable insights for teachers to organize English reading instruction in high school effectively.After one semester,the students in the experimental class showed a significant improvement in their reading comprehension scores compared with those in the control class,indicating that the application of Scaffolding Instruction Model can effectively improve their reading comprehension ability.The interviews showed that Scaffolding Instruction could improve students’ learning interest and increase their confidence in English.It is a popular teaching mode.This study can provide a reference value for future teaching.
