| In the late 19 th century, with the diversification of art forms, artists began to consider the nature of painting. They believed that the meaning of painting was not simply imitating nature, and painting began to show the tendency of flatness.Planar painting weakens the creation of space, light and shade, and volume and depth. In order to better express their subjective feelings after examining natural objects, artists no longer require to truly restore the objective nature, but simplify the complex and present the three-dimensional space in a flat way.The complex things and the deep connotation hidden behind the form are expressed in a condensed and generalized form.Rene Gruau(1909-2004)has a huge impact in the stage of French art in the 20 th century. He absorbed the essence of Eastern and Western art and gradually developed his distinctive painting style. In the picture,Gruau emphasizes subjective and pure color presentation, concise and bold line depiction, simple and flat modeling and compressed space expression,so that his works present a unique sense of formal beauty, simple and atmospheric yet interesting. The characters and scenes depicted in Gruau’s works are endowed with new vitality through the high degree of "purification" of his plane technique. The "unconscious mirror sense" and "flowing story plot" contained in his works undoubtedly brought a strong appeal to his works. This paper takes the concrete expression of planar language as the starting point, combined with the case analysis of Rene Gruau’s works,to explore the unique meaning of the planar language in Rene Gruau’s paintings. The introduction is divided into four parts: the first part firstly defines the concept of flat language, combs out the causes of flat language and the specific performance of flat language in painting; The second part tells the life experience of Rene Gruau and the formation of his own painting language. The third part analyzes the application of "flat" language in Rene Gruau’s works and studies the spiritual connotation behind it.The fourth part combines the above research with my own creation to explore the revelation and influence of the planar language in Rene Gruau’s works on my own creation practice. |
