| This paper systematically reviews the decorative techniques of ceramics in Shanxi during the Song,Liao,and Jin dynasties,focusing on materials excavated from kilns in the region,as well as materials from burial sites that can be clearly identified as local ceramics.On this basis,the chronological burial sites and kiln sites with clear phasing are used to determine the chronological evolution of ceramic decoration techniques in Shanxi,and the phases and regional characteristics are then analyzed and summarized.Finally,by comparing the differences in ceramic decoration techniques between Shanxi and Hebei,Henan,and Shaanxi,the technical exchange between Shanxi and its neighboring regions is discussed.The article is divided into four chapters: Chapter One mainly introduces an overview of kiln sites research.It briefly describes major kiln sites during the SongLiao-Jin period in Shanxi including glaze colors variety,decorations as well as surveying excavations;a summary is also provided regarding previous studies on decorative ceramics from this area.Chapter Two discusses decoration techniques for Shanxi’s Song-Liao-Jin porcelain from two aspects: body decoration(including carving flowers,leaves,patterns,textures,stamps,plastic pastes,twisted clay & glaze,hollowing,carving-inlay,raised lines)and color decoration(including black-and-white flower patterns,red-green enamel,threecolor,yellow-glazed black flowers,black glazed soy sauce color,multi-colored glazes).Chapter Three mainly analyzes popular time periods for decorative ceramic technique development within different regions based on chronological materials while also analyzing regional characteristics to divide them into three areas: Yanbei,Jinzhong,Jinnan respectively.Chapter Four primarily discusses how decorative techniques for porcelain production were influenced by surrounding areas such as Hebei Ding Kiln,Jingxing Kiln,Cizhou Kiln,Henan Dengfeng Kiln,Dangyangyu Kiln,Hebiji Kilns,Shaanxi Yaozhou Kilns through comparison with those used in Shanxi;further exploring interregional exchange among various kilns.Finally there is a conclusion summarizing previous sections while pointing out limitations or shortcomings of this study. |
