Russia launched the special military operation against Ukraine on February 24,2022,which has caused international concern.The Russia-Ukraine conflict not only brings profound changes to the development trend of the two countries,but also exerts tremendous impact on the international order.Newspapers both abroad and at home have reported massively on this issue.News reporters transform their values into the attributes of appraisal objects with employment of attitude resources,thus constructing their ideologies.Therefore,it is necessary to deconstruct and analyze the attitudinal resources of news reports on Russia-Ukraine conflict and reveal the positions and ideologies hidden behind the discourse.The theoretical bases of the research are Critical Discourse Analysis and Appraisal Theory.Critical Discourse Analysis is a kind of discourse analysis approach,aiming to explore the ideologies behind the communicative contexts by analyzing linguistic features and corresponding social context,thus disclosing the complex relationship among language,ideology and power.Appraisal Theory is considered as the development of SFL,which mainly focuses on all kinds of negotiable attitudes in discourses.This research makes a comparative research of attitudinal resources in the news reports of China Daily and The New York Times concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis.A total of 48 pieces of news reports are selected from the two media.The study aims to analyze the similarities and differences of attitudinal resources employed by China Daily and The New York Times,and disclose underlying positions and ideologies.Research questions include:(1)What attitudinal resources are employed by China Daily and The New York Times in the Russia-Ukraine conflict reports?(2)What are the similarities and differences of the distribution of attitudinal resources in selected news reports?(3)What are the positions and ideologies implied behind the distribution of attitudinal resources in the news reports from the two news media?Through quantitative and qualitative analysis,it is concluded that:(1)Both China Daily and The New York Times employ abundant attitudinal resources.(2)There are similarities and differences in the distribution of attitudinal resources in China Daily and the New York:Times.As regarded similarities,distributions of affect and judgement systems are similar.Differences in attitudinal resources between China Daily and The New York Times lie in appreciation system.Reaction system takes up the highest proportion in China Daily while valuation system is in a dominant position in The New York Times.(3)Ideologies and positions of China and America on the Russia-Ukraine conflict are different according to comparison analysis of attitudinal resources employed in the two media.China keeps an impartial position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict;China advises all parties involved to stay calm and restrained,and calls for dialogue and consultation.China also points out that America stirs up trouble in the Russia-Ukraine conflict with the intention to maintain its hegemony.America sides with Ukraine on this issue and seeks to consolidate its hegemony by calling on its allies to impose stringent sanctions against Russia.America also holds that Russia must bear the responsibility of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.This study is conducted with combination of Appraisal Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis,which enriches the application range of Appraisal Theory.What’s more,this study is meaningful in the writing and interpreting of news reports.It also helps readers cultivate critical thinking ability.
