A Study Of The Compilation Of History Of European Literature By Zhou Zuoren

History of European Literature is the first work of literature history compiled by Zhou Zuoren,and it is the first systematic work of foreign literature history in China.Since its appearance in 1918 has not only been an upsurge of compiling the history of foreign literature in China,but also impact on that in later generations significantly.Although the current academic research on History of European Literature is relatively extensive,there is still a lack of systematic and holistic research.In view of this,this paper takes as the research subject of History of European Literature,and puts History of European Literature under the background of Western Learning into East,from the perspective of compilation,then systematically analyzes its compilation style,materials,features and influence factors,so as to explore its effort of the western academic methods on the development of foreign literature history in China.It is of great significance to understand and reflect on the discipline construction of today’s Chinese foreign literature history.The thesis is composed of three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The introduction outlines the basic content of History of European Literature,the reason and significance of the topic selection,then analyzes and sorts out the research status of History of European Literature,finally explains the ideas and innovations of this thesis.The main part can be divided into three chapters.The first chapter takes "why to write" as the starting point,and examines the background and opportunity of the compilation of History of European Literature from the perspective of social background and personal knowledge level.The second chapter focuses on the problem of "how to write",and discusses the compilation style,materials and features of History of European Literature,and further reveals that systemically the uniqueness of History of European Literature in the Chinese and Western literary.The third chapter,with "what influence" as the center,discusses briefly the influence and value of History of European Literature,then expounds the academic value and scientific significance of History European Literature.The conclusion summarizes the compilation paradigm of the History of European Literature.The book has the following characteristics.First,under the social trend of Western Learning into East,History of European Literature has a strong feature of blending the western culture and Chinese cultural.The book not only selectively absorbs the compilation paradigm of western literary history,but also inherits the traditional Chinese academic system.Second,as Zhou Zuoren’s first academic work,History of European Literature reflects the expertise levels of Zhou Zuoren and the academic research degree of Peking University at that time.Third,in the context of the reform of modern school system,Zhou Zuoren compiled History of European Literature in response to the teaching requirements of the Peking University.The publication of this book not only serves a reference effect on the compilation of domestic foreign literature history,but also haves an important value and enlightenment effect on the construction of the discipline of foreign literature history in China.
