A Report On C-E Translation Of The History Of Chinese Tomb Murals (Chapter Ⅻ)

This introspective report is based on the Chinese-English translation of a 10000-word excerpt from the History of Chinese Tomb Murals(Chapter 12),commissioned by Zhu Shanhua,professor of the school of foreign languages of Southeast University.The purpose of this report is to analyse the problems and difficulties encountered during the translation process and the solutions that may help produce an adequate and readable target text.The12 th chapter,Thematic Discussion,mainly discusses the influence of the development of central Plains culture on the content of tomb murals in the chaotic regime change,and studies the great contribution made by the tomb murals in this period to the development of China’s tomb murals.In the case study,the translator analyzes the problems from Three-dimensional adaptive choice of Eco-translatology.In the linguistic dimension,the translator analyzed the phenomenon of polysemy,abstract words and nominalization to be faithful to the source text as well as satisfying the target audience’s needs.In the communicative dimension,there are long and complex sentences in the source text,which are difficult to translate.The translator adjusts the contents and structure of the source text,trying to make the translation more fluent and logical in the target language.In the cultural dimension,the translator ensured the coherence and consistency by adopting the strategies of adding conjunctions and replacing pronouns,which is of great help to achieve ecological balance while reading.In this report,Eco-translatology is used as the analytical framework to help the translator produce a qualified translation which conforms to the ecological environment of the target language.In this way,the translation can better convey the achievements and findings illustrated in the source text.
