The English Curriculum Standards for compulsory Education(2022-year Edition)advocates that English reading teaching needs to activate students’ known information and lead students engage in a series of interrelated and progressive language learning and activities that learning understanding,application practice and transfer innovation that point to thematic meaningful significance according to real situations and problems.The KWLS model is student-oriented and focuses on students’ initiative,advocating students to put forward questions and solve problems by themselves,in order to promote the development of diverse and high level abilities for students.There are four stages about KWLS model: “K” means “What I know”,to stimulate students’ minds with schematic information related to the topic to be studied;“W”stands for “What I want to know”,to ask themselves questions and learn to think independently;“L” means “What I have learned”,to develop students’ habit of reflective reading;and “S” means “What do still want to know/Share what I have learned”.With the help of KWLS model,this research regards fifty-five students in Class Six Grade Seven in a junior middle school as subjects,try to answer the following questions:(1)How does the KWLS model affect English reading interests of junior high school students?(2)How does the KWLS model affect English reading abilities and achievement of junior high school students?(3)How can the KWLS model be applied to the English reading teaching in junior high school?The data were collected through three instruments: reading test,questionnaires and interview,and analysed with the help of SPSS 21.0 to understand the application of the KWLS model for English reading teaching in junior high school.The findings are as follows: Firstly,the KWLS model has a positive impact on students’ interests in English reading.The model fully embodies the concept of humanistic teaching and provide enough learning space for students,giving students a sense of achievement in reading learning.Secondly,the KWLS model improves students’ English reading abilities and achievement.Integrating learning and learning reflection,from input to output,the KWLS model develops reading strategies,cultivates reading habits and improve reading achievement for students.Thirdly,the KWLS model raises students’ awareness of the importance of reading.The following pedagogical insights were gained from this research: pay attention to the connection between students’ background knowledge and reading text;guide students to ask their own questions and develop their independent inquiry abilities;focus on the value of students’ self-assessment for reading and encourage students to recreate in collaborative and independent learning.
