Consumption is one of the "troika" driving economic growth.Compared with investment and export, which have strong development momentum, consumer demand has been sluggish for a long time.In recent years, consumer confidence has continued to decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, posing severe challenges to China’s economic development.During the 14 th Five-Year Plan period, when the two Centenary goals converge, stimulating cultural consumption, unleashing diversified consumption potential of residents and stimulating domestic demand became an important driving force for the steady growth of China’s economy. This paper systematically combs the literature related to digital economy, cultural consumption and their relationship, and analyzes the influence mechanism of the development of digital economy on residents’ cultural consumption from the perspective of income and industrial structure.Based on principal component analysis method, this paper constructs the development indicator system of digital economy, discusses the temporal and spatial changes of the development of digital economy, and uses the macro data of 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions from 2014 to 2020 to build a panel fixed effect model for baseline regression analysis. On this basis, heterogeneity analysis, endogeneity test and mechanism test were carried out.The main results show that:(1)the development of digital economy has a significant positive impact on residents’ cultural consumption;(2)The impact of digital economy development on residents’ cultural consumption has obvious heterogeneity.First, the impact of digital economy development in urban areas is slightly greater than that in rural areas.Second, the influence coefficient of digital economy development on residents’ cultural consumption is the highest in the eastern region, followed by the western region, and the lowest in the central region.Third, with the gradual advancement of cultural consumption, the marginal effect of the development of digital economy on cultural consumption is gradually expanding.(3)The development of digital economy promotes residents’ cultural consumption through the two paths of income increase effect and industrial structure upgrading effect. The mediating effect of residents’ income level is 15.8%,and that of industrial structure upgrading is 46.96%.In the robustness test of the empirical study, this paper adopts the methods of changing samples, changing core variables and increasing control variables. This part selects the data of China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)in 2015,2017 and 2019,and finally gets 111,943 effective samples after processing. The sum of cultural entertainment and tourism consumption is taken as the proxy variable of residents’ cultural consumption. The entropy method is used to reconstruct the digital economy development index, and the risk preference and other individual control variables are added. This paper analyzes the influence of the development of digital economy on Chinese residents’ cultural consumption from the microcosmic level by using Tobit model. The results showed that there was still a significant positive effect, and the macro and micro analyses complemented each other.Based on theoretical analysis and empirical results, this paper puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions:(1)Accelerate core technology research and development to promote the deep integration of digital economy and real economy;(2)Build modern cultural industry and innovate digital cultural consumption pattern;(3)Improve public cultural services and social security system.
