| The dissertation aims to study the performance of the Zan of illustrations in literary criticism of "the Romance of The Three Kingdoms" and "the Water Margin".It combs through the versions of two novels from Yuan dynasty to Qing dynasty and analyses the revolushion rules of the Zan in different times and regions.The function of literary criticism of the Zan is the further exploration.The Zan is the text part in the Chinese classical novel and opera illustrations.With illustrations as the carrier,the Zan mainly describes the contents of the illustrations,strengthens the narrative of the text,and comments on relevant plots or characters,which can be regarded as a special literary criticism.In terms of the origin,the Zan is a branch of literature style Zan in popular novels and dramas of Ming and Qing Dynasties.In addition,the illustrations and thematic patterns of pinghua in Yuan Dynasty,such as the romance of The Three Kingdoms,were directly influenced by the illustrations of Buddhist scriptures in Tang Dynasty,and then affected the illustrations and the Zan of the Romance of The Three Kingdoms and the Water Margin in Ming Dynasty.In terms of the forms,the Zan in the Romance of The Three Kingdoms and the Water Margin can be divided into four categories according to the sequence of appearance: the illustration-title,the couplet,the Zan of plots and the Zan of character.The illustration-title mainly appeared in Jianyang version of The Romance of The Three Kingdoms and the editions of the Water Margin in the Ming Dynasty.The main function of the illustration-title was to assist image and text narration and guide readers to read.However,due to the dual identity of the reader and the author of the engraver,their personalized text acceptance was often revealed in the expression of the illustration-title.The couplet only appears in the Romance of The Three Kingdoms published by Zhou Yuejiao in the Ming Dynasty,which is a poetic criticism with literary implication.The zan of plots appeared relatively late.In the Ming Dynasty,Mr.Zhong Bojing Criticized the Water Margin published by the Sizhi press and the second edition of hero spectrum published by the Xiongfei press in Chongzhen period adopted this form of the Zan.The Zan of character was written for characters in novels.In the Qing Dynasty,the novels Romance of The Three Kingdoms and the Water were mostly printed with the images of characters attached to the front of the scroll,and the Zans of character were either inscribed in the margin or the latter half of the illustrations,which inherited the literary tradition of the Han and Tang dynasties,mainly in the form of verse poetry praise,and presented the critical tendency of praise without criticism. |
