| Sight interpreting,a type of activity where the interpreter reads the source text and then verbally interprets it to the target audience, has become increasingly prevalent. However, this method requires interpreters to possess high translation quality and accuracy rates, which can be challenging given the mental and physical demands of the information process. In sight translation, the processes of listening, reading, translating, and speaking can often conflict with the limited energy of interpreters, placing significant pressure on their improvisational performance. The principle of linguistic economy advocates for using simple and efficient language to achieve effective communication, which requires a balance between meeting communication needs and minimizing mental and physical effort.Adhering to the principle can help reduce the mental pressure of interpreters effectively.Successfully completing a sight interpreting task depends on the interpreters’ strategies and skills, with the most common being para-sense group partition and cohesive strategies. In sight interpreting, the two major issues of para-sense group partition and cohesion are directly related to the quality of the target language, which determines whether the audience can truly understand its intended meaning. This report selects an MBA financial online course,“Financial Regulation: From Global Financial Crisis to Fintech and the COVID-19 Pandemic”,as the material for interpreting practice. The course, taught by M.Krishna Erramilli from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, covers almost all the relevant topics about financial issues since the COVID-19 outbreak. It analyzes the current operating conditions of financial institutions and individuals under financial supervision. In this practice,an audience was chosen as the teaching object to maximize the simulation effort of sight interpreting. This report provides a brief overview of sight interpreting, discussing its concept and characteristics. It employs the principle of linguistic economy, encompassing the principle of fewest steps, least effort, and shortest link,to explore the application of para-sense group partition in sentences and cohesion strategies from the perspective of language input and output.Drawing on the theory of grammatical structure and meaning units,it analyzes para-sense group partition and cohesive methods in sight interpreting. In terms of source language input,para-sense group partition strategies are summarized into three types: identity partition, fission partition, and fusion partition.Additionally, four cohesive devices, including ellipsis of functional words, using references, lexical repetition, and logical manifestation are utilized to optimize information output.Through case analysis, this report concludes that the application of para-sense group partition and cohesive strategies under the guidance of the linguistic economy principle can effectively save time and effort for interpreters, demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of these strategies.Furthermore, this report summarizes its major findings of this simulated sight interpreting practice and points out its shortcomings, seeking to provide a reference and guidance for future sight interpreting practice. |
