| Traditional Chinese medicine is a traditional medical treatment method that has been effective for thousands of years in China.The great challenges faced by contemporary human health and the development of modern medicine have triggered a new understanding of the status and role of Chinese medicine in contemporary times.With its long history and rich accumulation of clinical practice,Chinese medicine has gone abroad and into the world.At the same time it has also come into the view of Western media.The media has always been required to be neutral and objective in content;however,as a carrier of ideology,it more or less carries an attitude and stance on certain matter,thereby affecting the perception of the public.The discourse construction of Chinese medicine in Western media will promote or restrict its internationalization to a certain extent.Therefore,it is necessary to reveal the attitudes in Western media towards Chinese medicine through discourse analysis.The analysis in this thesis includes two sub-parts: micro-analysis and macro-analysis.The micro-analysis section,via the corpus-based analytical techniques,unfolds Western media’s specific selections and collaborative uses of various types of vocabulary;based on van Dijk’s socio-cognitive theory,the macro-analysis section reveals that the discursive construction of Chinese medicine in the media discourse has a close relationship with social,cultural and cognitive factors.It has found that: 1)the images that TCM treatments have been tried,widely accepted and effective have been constructed,but Western Medicine is still generally favored;2)reports from each country have their own focuses,but they are all concerned about the impact of TCM on the ecological environment,and the American reports during the epidemic have a political tendency.Finally,this study also provides insights into promoting its international communication in a more strategic and targeted manner. |
