Frame Analysis Of Food Security Reports In China Daily

Food occupies an essential position in the government’s affairs.Food security is the eternal topic in human society and is the foundation of national prosperity and happiness.At present,China’s food production is basically self-sufficient,and its food security has achieved remarkable success.China’s food security plays a essential role in guaranteeing global food security.It is of great significance to explore the frames of China’s food security reports to raise public awareness of saving food,maintain China’s food security,promote world food security governance,and construct a discourse system with Chinese characteristics.This thesis takes China Daily website’s reports from the 12^thFive-year Plan to the 13^thFive-year Plan on food security as research object.And a small corpus of 85,688 words is built.Based on Zang Guoren’s Three-level Frame Theory,this thesis explores frames the China Daily has constructed when reporting food security.Besides,this thesis discusses the social realities,China and Chinese food security images that are reflected by these reporting frames.The major findings of this thesis are as follows.First,China Daily cites many authentic sources to introduce China’s food security achievements at the global structure.The medium structure reflects that China Daily’s reports are mainly concise and brief.An analysis of local structure finds that China Daily holds a positive attitude towards China’s food security but worries about the food security situations of other countries and the world.Second,China Daily has constructed four frames when reporting food security:an objective and time-sensitive material selection frame,a frame for action to safeguard food security,an appealing frame for improving the food security system,and an emotional frame in which the positive affect coexists with the worry.Those four frames depict the overall achievements of Chinese food security,construct positive images of Chinese food security and Chinese nation in global food security governance.Third,the food security frames reflect the current state of food security in China and the world.Thanks to the efforts made by the Chinese government and all sectors of society,China’s food can meet its domestic needs.Due to the influence of various natural and human-caused reasons such as climate change,food security in developing countries and the world is experiencing tremendous challenges.Countries around the world should strengthen cooperation to respond to food security challenges jointly.Forth,the reporting frames constructed by China Daily convey a positive Chinese image and a sustainable China’s food security image,which breaks the Western stereotypes.These images play a vital role in ensuring Chinese food security,in facing global food security challenge,and in expressing China’s own voice.This thesis broadens the research object of the frame theory and makes an bold attempt to combine the frame theory with corpus-based research method.Besides,this thesis develops research method and data collection method in frame analysis.In practice,this thesis reveals that China’s food security is guaranteed firmly,and China plays an active role in global food security governance,which improves national pride and awakens the public’s attention on food security.The frames contribute to the construction of the responsible China,and make the voice of China heard.Moreover,they improve China’s international communication capacity and amplify Chinese voices on the international stage.
