| In the contemporary world,cultural communication and exchange are increasingly important.Therefore,telling Chinese stories properly is one of the key issues for scholars since it involves establishing foreign discourse system.The Insights into Chinese Culture,a bestseller popularizing Chinese culture for both domestic and foreign readers,has made a pragmatic and successful attempt in this respect.The book introduces Chinese culture in detail from four aspects: wisdom and beliefs,creativity and exchange,art and aesthetics,folk customs,which elaborates the essence of Chinese traditional culture and national connotation.Based on the comprehensive cognition of the text,the author and the reader,its English version makes rhetorical adjustments to achieve cognitive equivalence between translation subjects.From the perspective of the six principles of cognitive translatology proposed by Wang Yin,especially on experience,interactivity and harmony of translation,this study makes a theoretical review and practical summary of rhetorical adjustments in cultural translation.Firstly,this paper compares the different cognition of generalized rhetoric of Chinese and English readers to explore the experience of translation.Secondly,it analyzes the content of rhetorical adjustments in English translation to verify the interactivity in translation.Thirdly,the methods of rhetorical adjustments in English translation are summarized,revealing how the translator achieves cognitive equivalence and harmony in translation.To be specific:(1)The differences in rhetorical cognition between the Chinese and the English readers of Insights into Chinese Culture are embodied in three aspects: information needs and reception psychology,language style and cultural tradition as well as ideologies and values.(2)The rhetorical adjustments of the English translation of Insights into Chinese Culture are embodied in four aspects: arguments,appeals,arrangements,and aesthetics.(3)Four methods are employed to accommodate the appreciation and cognition of English readers in translating Insights into Chinese Culture: selected translation,adapted translation,edited translation,and condensed translation.In conclusion,based on cognitive translatology perspective,this study explores rhetorical adjustments in the translation of Insights into Chinese Culture,revealing the cognitive mechanism of rhetorical language and the cognitive activities of translators accordingly.Besides,this study also provides references for international publicity translation. |
