Today’s painting world presents a geometric, reductive and minimalist approach to the formal language of the picture, with a relative lack of attention to emotion, and with the rise of digital painting, people’s perception of the image can inevitably be slightly hollow.Pan Yuliang and Frida Kahlo are well-known female artists of the 20 th century, with highly representative works in their respective fields. One was a domestic artist of the Republican period, the other from across the ocean in Mexico, and although they grew up in different geographical environments, they shared many common destinies and similarities in their pictorial expression.Due to the rise of the feminist movement and the awakening of women’s consciousness, their resilience and spirit of not being bound by bad luck left a deep imprint on each other’s paintings. This essay takes the perspective of the expression of emotional experience in the works of Pan Yuliang and Frida as the starting point, and analyses the allegorical nature of the subject matter, the expressiveness of the colours, and the differences in style in the paintings, and then elaborates on the important role of these languages in constructing the images, shaping the forms, and conveying the emotional experience behind the works. The paper as a whole is divided into three sections. The first chapter sets out the underlying reasons why emotional experience is unique in the work of both artists. The second chapter analyses the allegorical nature of the subject matter and the expressive nature of the language used in the paintings of the two artists, and the expression of the emotional experience in their works through composition, form and colour. The third chapter summarises and analyses the source and value of emotion in the works, and discusses the influence of emotional experience on the author’s oil paintings in relation to his own practice.
