Under the complicated background of the 20 th century,most Chinese artists have to face the reality of collision and blending of ancient and modern,east and west.The rise of the New Culture Movement,the initial awakening of the national modern consciousness,the impact of the spread of Western learning to the east,the establishment of New China,the need for art to serve politics,and the reform and opening up to promote the innovation of ideas.It makes flower-and-bird painting in the past 100 years keep changing shape,showing a brilliant and colorful scene.Today,Chinese painting is still facing a major problem from the traditional to the modern transition,the change of social form makes the cultural connotation and context have changed.As the representative of Chinese traditional culture,Chinese painting has been different from 100 years ago,in which flower-and-bird painting has also produced a new artistic appearance and value,people began to explore art freely.For example,Wu Changshuo used the nutrition of stele calligraphy to bring out the golden stone brush and ink personality of his flower and bird paintings.The simplicity and naivety of Qi Baishi’s paintings became traditional aesthetics,and Pan Tianshou’s single-mindedness represented the spirit of the times.The exquisite beauty of Wang Xuetao is deeply loved by the general public.Lai Shenru and Mei Zhongzhi have created a new world for flower-and-bird painting.At the end of the 20 th century,the flower-and-bird painting turned to a more pure modernism.These changes and phenomena mean that the flower-and-bird painting art in the past 100 years in the aesthetic concept,evaluation criteria,technical performance has undergone great changes.However,when we look back,we seem to find that there is a strong trend of thought in culture and art,which is to re-examine the tradition and really see the essence and shortcomings of the traditional literati flower-and-bird paintings,cultural self-confidence urges us to take a more rational look at the differences between Chinese and Western cultures.Mr.Bi Jinji’s flower-and-bird painting art is a typical example worth studying.He created a single line painting of flowers and birds,showing extraordinary courage and creativity.The textbook of flower-and-bird painting shows his rigorous teaching attitude,keen observation and expressiveness.By comparing Bi Jinji with the flowerand-bird painters of the same period,we can see his unique understanding of the traditional theory of painting and his artistic personality,as well as his accurate grasp of inheritance and innovation.Although artists are closely related to the pulse of the times,their generation of artists are more easily influenced by the artistic trends of the times.Therefore,the ebb and flow of the 20 th century flower-and-bird painting can be seen in BI Jinji’s works and thoughts,from serving the people to pursuing pure art,from accepting the western influence to returning to the cultural tradition.This paper mainly attempts to analyze and study the evolution of flower-andbird painting in the 20 th century and the art of Bi Jinji’s flower-and-bird painting by means of image analysis,supported by documentary evidence,in order to explore the artistic style and artistic thought of Bi Jinji,so as to comb the 20 th century flower-andbird painting changes in the path,and to provide reference coordinates for the future development of flower-and-bird painting.Look at the past to see the future.
