The majority of ancient Chinese paintings survive in caves, tombs and Taoist temples, largely in the form of traditional recoloured murals. These murals also constitute the most important painting samples in the history of ancient Chinese painting.Since the Song and Yuan dynasties, the development of re-colour painting has gradually fallen into decline, but it has not been interrupted and has continued to develop among the people. As the longest-running and self-contained art,Chinese repainting is a precious artistic treasure of the Chinese nation. It has a unique ’Chinese’ character, fully reflecting the ethnicity of Oriental painting and the spirit of traditional painting.Since the founding of New China in the twentieth century,heavy-colour painting has been widely inherited and developed on the basis of the emphasis on the preservation, transmission and study of history and culture, and has been introduced into academic education and official exhibitions of various levels. This paper examines the historical development of traditional Chinese recolour painting, and investigates the ways in which it has been passed down and innovated in the development of contemporary mural painting.Through a study of the historical forms of recolour painting expression and the inheritance and innovation of traditional recolour painting techniques in contemporary mural painting,it explains the innovative ways in which traditional recolour painting and contemporary mural painting art have collided.Among other things,it explores the issue of innovative interpretation of contemporary mural painting in terms of painting language, expressive techniques and material application by tracing the artistic characteristics of recolour painting.Under the development of the spiritual world and material civilization,we need to open up new fields with a new vision in line with the development of the times, integrating this "new with the ancient" style of creation with national aesthetics into the creation of contemporary frescoes.
