This report is based on the translation practice of the excerpt of the industrial novel Jinxiu.The source text of this practice report is an excerpt from Volume Three of the novel.The story is set in the early 21 st century when state-owned enterprises faced the great challenge of transformation and upgrading in the new development situation.Zhang Huaiyong was appointed as the General Manager of the Jinxiu factory,later called Jinxiu Company,at a critical moment and carried out a series of reforms in response to the various problems of the enterprise,leading the workers to overcome the difficulties and successfully bringing new vitality to the enterprise.And the translator selects the three rules of Skopos theory as the guiding theory according to the genre and linguistic characteristics of the source text.The practice report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the task description,which introduces the relevant information and linguistic features of the source text.Chapter Two is the process description,including the preparations,the translation process,and the revision and proofreading after translation.Chapter Three introduces the concept of Skopos theory,outlining its three rules and practical uses.Chapter Four is the case study,illustrating the the application of Skopos theory to translation of this novel and how they shape the translation strategies at three levels in text.The translator employed strategies such as addition,omission,and conversion at the lexical level,and combination,division,and sentence reorganization at the syntactical level.Finally,the translator tried to achieve textual coherence by adding some cohesive devices and employing extension.Chapter Five is the conclusion,which reviews the problems in this translation practice and summarizes the role played by the Skopos theory in the translation.The translator aims to deepen her understanding of Chinese-English translation techniques and proficiency in translating industrial novels in China so as to help build up their expertise and provide assistance to others when translating similar works. |
