For a long time, the visually impaired group has been suffering from social discrimination and prejudice, facing many difficulties such as loss of social discourse, weakened social identity and social integration dilemma. The graduation work "Light Catcher" records the whole process of Chen Kaichan,a visually impaired teenager,as he strives to integrate into society by accepting his disability label on the way to pursue his dream.Through the camera,we witness the growth of the visually impaired teenager and feel the real life situation of the visually impaired, aiming to reveal the relationship between the disadvantaged and society in the current social environment, update the viewers’ understanding of the visually impaired, and gather the power from watching. How to convey emotions through visual expression and realize the emotional resonance between the audience and the disadvantaged groups is a difficult problem to be considered in the creation of character documentaries. This paper takes the graduation work "Child of the light" as a research case, takes empathy theory as the basis and research, takes the visually impaired group as the object of attention, and combines the narrative characteristics of documentaries, and analyzes in detail the empathy narrative strategy in the creation of special character documentaries through the creative practice in "Child of the light".Using the case study method and field research method, this paper examines how the documentary creates emotional empathy with the audience through the narrative strategy and the narrative ethics that should be held in the documentary on special characters presented in this film by combining the four aspects of narrative structure, perspective, language and style with the specific clips and cases in the documentary "Child of the light".At the same time,we reflect on the shortcomings of the graduation work "The Light Catcher" in the creative practice, and explain the ethics and morals that need to be held in the creation of social disability awareness and documentaries, hoping to provide some reference for the more comprehensive development of documentaries on special characters.
