| This text is a report based on the practice of English-Chinese translation of A Concise Survey of Western Civilization(Chapter Ⅺ)by Brian A.Pavlac.The part that the translator is responsible for covers the Industrial Revolution,dating between 1764 and 1914.The material translated is a historical text.No Chinese version of the book has been published,by the time when the report is written.In the process of translation,American translation theorist Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory is used as the guiding principle.During translating,the translator adopts corresponding strategies to address the problems encountered in the process,hoping to achieve a smooth and natural equivalence and finally to produce a faithful,accurate and fluent translation.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is task description,which introduces the background of the translation task,including the source of the task,the target reader,the linguistic characteristics of the source text,and the translation requirements.Chapter Two describes the translation process in three phases: preparations,translating,and proofreading.Chapter Three introduces Functional Equivalence Theory,the theory employed in translating,giving an overview of the formation of the theory,its main ideas,and its application in translating activities.Chapter Four is case study,the main part of this report.It includes three aspects: a)analysis at the lexical level,mainly including the use of literal translation with annotation,amplification,and omission,b)analysis at the syntactic level,mainly focused on division,combination and voice conversion,and c)analysis at the textual level,exploring how to achieve functional equivalence between texts regarding cohesion and coherence by adding cohesive word and maintaining consistency of synonyms.Chapter Five is conclusion,summarizing the insights and gains from this translation task and pointing out problems and the direction of future efforts. |
