In the history of Chinese architecture,the graphic images and words carved on the eaves tiles have been telling the world about feelings of home and country and showing romantic sentiments.The eaves tile is also known as the Goutou,which is the dropping part of the semicircle-shaped tile top.It not only protects the eaves from the erosion of exposure to the elements,but also increases the life of the building,and it has a great decorative and aesthetic effect.As an ancient Chinese building material with both practicality and artistry,the appearance of eaves tiles has epoch-making significance.During the Han Dynasty,the development of eaves tiles reached its peak,and the eaves tiles excavated till now include not only various decorative tiles,but also a large number of eaves tiles with characters.These tile inscriptions,full of vitality,not only have profound literary and historical value,but also represent the aesthetic interest and spirituality of people at that time,corroborate the development of calligraphy in the Han Dynasty,and have greatly influenced the art of calligraphy and seal engraving in later ages.So far,many scholars from ancient and modern times have delved into the eaves tiles with characters,mainly on their textual content and font evolution,while this thesis discusses the elements of seal carving art in eaves tiles from the perspective of seal carving art.We will go into the art of Han Dynasty eaves tiles inscriptions,combine historical materials and pictures,and experience the pursuit of artistic modelling of characters and the ability to recognize and express the beauty of characters,pay attention to the structure of characters,observe the deformation of characters and structural changes of characters in tile eaves tiles inscriptions,and feel the beauty brought by them.The first part,this paper gives an overview of the origin and development of Han Dynasty eaves tiles,and analyzes the classification and meaning of tile inscriptions in the period of Hans dynasties,so as to pave the way for the following study.In the second part,the artistic characteristics of the eaves tiles inscriptions are analyzed in detail from the perspective of seal carving art,starting from the three aspects of character structure,chapter layout and style of the inscriptions.The third part explores the influence of the eaves tiles inscriptions on the art of seal carving in later ages,and their relevance in the practice of seal carving.At last,it is supposed to inspire my own artistic creation through above analysis.
