| Since the 1990 s,Puzzle Film has received much attention as an emerging film category.David Bordwell pioneered the concept of "Puzzle Film" in his 2006 book "The Narrative Method of Hollywood," which is translated domestically as "Puzzle Film.".In mystery movies,narration is often unreliable.The director intentionally provides the audience with incorrect information to hide the mystery.The complex narrative method makes people feel like they are in a maze,and the mystery may not be revealed until the end of the movie.In 2020,the director Florian Zeller successfully led the audience into the labyrinthine spiritual world of an Alzheimer’s patient using an internally focused narrative perspective,similar but different spatial settings,and chaotic narrative time in the film "The Father".Therefore,the author wants to try to probe into how the conventional proposition of disease writing can be presented in the emerging narrative carrier of Puzzle Film.What are the advantages of this representation compared to the traditional linear narrative model? How does the strategy of disease writing in mystery movies contribute to the image text’s more profound attention to practical issues and the transmission of life experiences?This thesis consists of four parts.The first chapter focuses on the origin and concept of Puzzle Film,and then discusses how disease are narrated in film and television works;The second chapter focuses on the discussion of disease writing in Puzzle Film,focusing on exploring how Puzzle Film organically combine their own narrative mechanisms with disease signs.The third chapter is a supplement to the previous two chapters,mainly exploring the humanistic value brought by Puzzle Films and reflecting on the problems existing in the film text.The fourth chapter combines the author’s final project to discuss the narrative of diseases in Puzzle Film from a practical perspective,and analyzes the issues from theory to practice.To sum up,Puzzle Film were born in the New Hollywood film era,and postmodern trends and the third technological revolution have bred this film category.Vertically,Puzzle Films are directly influenced by the style of black films in the 1940 s and 1950s;Thinking horizontally,the complex narrative methods of European art films provide reference for Puzzle Films;More specifically,the mystery culture triggered by Puzzle Film has also become a part of Puzzle Film.In addition,the complex narrative method of Puzzle Film completes unreliable narratives through limited perspective,and ultimately presents chaotic narrative time and space.As a result,the illness experience of patients with diseases has become an effective means of rationalizing puzzle settings.However,the application of disease elements in Puzzle Film is far from simple external plots.Expressing patients’ cognitive biases through a limited perspective,using unreliable narratives to narrate patients’ painful medical experiences,and expressing their spiritual world internally makes Puzzle Film not a mere form of dazzling technique,but rather a sophisticated puzzle design that engages the audience in the narrative and ultimately achieves spiritual shaking,thereby attracting attention to special and marginalized groups. |
