| New Youth, one of the most influential newspapers during the May Fourth Movement, occupies a pivotal position in both cultural history research and Party history research. However,as an important historical resource, the folklore value of the magazine has rarely been discussed. The New Youth was born at a time when the political situation was turbulent and the discipline of folklore was first established, and the magazine contained a great deal of discussion of folklore by young intellectuals.Using the New Youth between 1915-1922 as a textual resource, and using the documentary research method and comparative research method,I first focus on the overall folkloric characteristics of the magazine, and secondly explore the folkloric values embodied in the three aspects of the magazine: folkloric expression, folkloric outlook, and folkloric influence. The paper consists of three parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. In the introductory section,I introduce the research background of this paper, sort out the current status of the study of New Youth, clarify the research ideas and research methods, and clarify the relevant concepts. The main part of the paper is discussed in four chapters. In the first chapter,I outline the folklore features of the magazine. In the specific context of the times and the development of the magazine,I explored three aspects of its folkloric characteristics: a distinct object of change,a progressive goal of change, and an active role in change. In the second chapter, based on specific textual materials,I systematically sort out and discuss the folkloric expressions in New Youth. There are three main areas: wedding and funeral rituals, folk art,and folk beliefs. The young intellectuals’ concern for folklore issues can be reflected in these three aspects. The first folklore value of the New Youth is the reformation of folklore events. In the third chapter,I focus on the subjects of folklore expression, exploring the contributions of the young intellectual leaders represented by Chen Duxiu,Hu Shi,Lu Xun,and Zhou Zuoren to the development of the folklore discipline, and uncovering the folklore consciousness embedded in their revolutionary or literary outlooks. The second folkloric value of the New Youth is its enlightenment and pioneering of the establishment of modern Chinese folklore. In the fourth chapter,I focus on analyzing the impact of this folklore change on society, which is divided into three main aspects: the generation of a new intellectual class, the change of language folklore, and the improvement of social customs. The third folklore value of the New Youth is the renewal of the social landscape. In the concluding section,I summarize and reflect on this study.Taken together,I have written this paper based on the exploration of the folklore value of the New Youth to complement and enrich the study of the disciplinary history of folklore. On the one hand, the New Youth promoted the iterative change of social folklore, reflexively criticizing traditional folklore and creating new folklore, and on the other hand,it awakened the folklore consciousness in Chinese culture, thus contributing to the formation and development of the discipline. The "going to the folk" and "common people’s consciousness" of this period became the foundational disciplinary pursuits of modern folklore. Before the beginning of the song movement, the New Youth had already made sufficient theoretical, practical, and human resources preparations for the establishment of folklore studies. The New Youth has an important enlightening effect on the establishment of modern Chinese folklore. This folklore change also inspires the present folklore transmission and change. |
