A Translation Report On WTO Annual Report 2021 From The Perspective Of Explicitation Strategy(Excerpts)

The source text of this translation practice is selected from the website of the World Trade Organization(WTO).From the perspective of style,the original text is an economic and business report with the characteristics of formality,conciseness and directness.From the perspective of linguistic features,the vocabulary is relatively simple and stable;syntactically,it often uses fixed sentences or fixed phrases and often uses complicated and long sentences;from the analysis of the discourse,the source text has strong cohesion and logic.In summary,economic and trade text is more formal,rigorous in content,and has a fixed format.The translator finds that the common translation methods tend to cause the loss of information in the target text,which makes the target text unable to be consistent with the content and writing style of the original text.Explicitation translation strategy can clarify the implicit or ambiguous information of the original text,which facilitates the understanding of the target language readers,and reduces the understanding obstacles or understanding deviations.The explicitation strategy makes the translation more coherent and logical by strengthening cohesion.This translation strategy is proper and effective for the translation practice.The translation report is composed of five parts.Chapter one introduces the translation task,the linguistic features of the original text in particular and the significance of this report.Chapter two narrates the translation process in detail,including the pre-translation preparation,translation procedures and post-translation reviewing.Chapter three focuses on the translation theoretical basis — the explicitation strategy,which contributes to making translation clearer and easily understandable for the target readers.Under the guidance of the explicitation strategy,this thesis explores translation strategies of economic and trade texts from three aspects: vocabulary,sentence,and discourse.In chapter four,the translator selects some typical translation cases to demonstrate the application of explicitation strategy in her translation process.In vocabulary translation,the translator adds annotations and replaces abstract words with concrete words to make the target text more explicit and fully expressed.In sentence translation,the translator splits the sentences,and inverts the order of some original sentences.In discourse translation,the translator attaches great importance to cohesion in structure.Finally,in chapter five,the translator draws a final conclusion of the complete translation report by way of a summary and reflections on the practice.Although the explicitation strategy can effectively improve the translation quality,the ways to realize the explicitation are affected mainly by the translator ’ s feelings.Also,the excessive use of explicitation will lead to the redundancy of the translation.Therefore,in the translation process,it is necessary to grasp the appropriate degree,and how to realize this degree remains to be further discussed.
