At the beginning of the study of Vonnegut, the academic community had a great misunderstanding of Vonnegut and a great dispute about the value of Vonnegut’s works.Later, after a period of debate and research in the academic community,it was found that the study of Vonnegut’s works should not only stay at the story level or narrative level, but should be combined with the author’s life and creative ideas to explore Vonnegut’s works at the writer level,It will be found that Vonnegut is actually a postmodern anthropologist and writer with a deep sense of historical mission and social responsibility and a strong sense of joining the world, with a sensitive political sense of smell.Vonnegut’s works vividly reveal that in the post industrial era,the irrational operation of the capitalist system has led to frequent wars, social injustice, the abuse of science and technology and other social problems, showing the severe individual survival and spiritual predicament faced by human beings under various disasters. It is with his humorous brushwork and the cloak of science fiction that he wraps around the serious theme, exposes the dark essence hidden under the cloak of capitalist hypocrisy through the narrative techniques with post-modern art,and criticizes the irrationality of the capitalist system. At the same time,Vonnegut’s works show profound concern for the fate of human beings, and the humanitarianism that actively seeks a way out for the plight of human existence in the post-modern world echoes the post industrial civilization. It pays attention to and examines the track of the development of the post industrial society under the capitalist system with a seemingly gentle but actually quite sharp vision, and reassesses the relationship between people, people and society, and people and nature in this society. The language of Vonnegut’s works makes people laugh, but the content reflected is prudent and serious. The lines in the novel all show his deep concern and critical courage for human destiny. The themes of his novels are diverse, and the writing perspective is multi-dimensional,but they all focus on "people" from a humanitarian standpoint. His novels either focus on the helpless and miserable life of ordinary people and soldiers in the war,or expose the fooling and cheating of the upper ruling class of capitalist society on ordinary people, and actively seek solutions to the plight while criticizing. This paper mainly takes two representative works of Vonnegut,Slaughterhouse Five and Cat’s Cradle,as the main works, supplemented by other works,to deeply explore the humanitarian thoughts expressed in Vonnegut’s novels. The main body of this paper is divided into three parts: The first chapter analyzes the reasons for the formation of Vonnegut’s humanitarianism from three aspects: family environment and personal experience, social era and western cultural tradition; The second chapter combs the humanitarianism thought in Vonnegut’s works from his standpoint, attitude and political factors contained in his works; The third chapter mainly explores Vonnegut’s methods of solving the problems of post-modern human beings in the face of survival dilemma from three different dimensions of the community. This paper believes that Vonnegut’s novels strongly emphasize that people and other things are a kind of relationship of mutual subjectivity and equal dialogue, expose and criticize the shortcomings of the capitalist system from the standpoint of "people",and advocate the construction of a "big family" community that includes all mankind. These contents constitute the rich connotation of the humanitarian thought in his novels, and also highlight Vonnegut’s sense of social responsibility and political responsibility. In particular, its "big family" community thought, which includes all mankind, not only has a relatively clear era value, but also has practical significance today. This study will certainly enrich the study of Vonnegut’s humanitarian thought. |
