A Report On Translation Of In A Field Of Blue(Excerpts)

This is an English-Chinese translation report on the first six chapters of In a Field of Blue,a historical novel written by Gemma Liviero and published by Lake Union Publishing in 2020.This book,against the backdrop of WWI and WWII in Britain and France,unfolds the history of a declining British noble family to reflect people’s miserable life and soldiers’ mental disorders during that period.Since the book is peppered with simple words and concise sentences,its language is majorly informal and colloquial.This translation report discusses how to reconstruct the cohesive ties of the selected chapters under the guidance of Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory.The report aims to analyze the translation methods of cohesive ties in the fiction from English to Chinese.At first,translation task and the translation process of the excerpts are described.Then,the theoretical foundation is introduced including the working definition of cohesion,cohesion in translation,and classification of cohesion.Furthermore,the case study is discussed concerning the translation of cohesive ties from English to Chinese under the guidance of Halliday and Hasan’s classification of cohesion.Finally,the summary part presents the reflections,as well as the limitations and suggestions.The report emphasizes that the translation of cohesive ties should focus on the semantic relations between cohesive items since cohesion is a semantic concept.In the translation of reference,substitution,and ellipsis,great attention should be paid to the referents of the cohesive items;in the translation of conjunction,great importance should be attached to the logical relations of clauses and the differences of clausal sequences between Chinese and English;in the translation of reiteration and collocation,emphasis should be placed on Chinese fixed collocation and wording.As for the translation methods of the six cohesive ties,conversion,amplification,and omission are more frequently employed in the translation of reference,substitution,ellipsis,and conjunction,while retention is more commonly used in the translation of reiteration,and collocation.It is hoped that the report can guide the future translation of cohesive ties.
