| The source text of this translation project is an excerpt from They Both Die at the End,a young adult novel written by the American author Adam Silvera.It tells stories about two boys,Mateo and Rufus,who have received the Death-Cast’s call which tells them they have only one day left to live.By doing this translation practice,the translator wants to have a basic command of the characteristics of American young adult novels and improve her translating skills as well.The novel consists of numbers of short stories told by different characters.The language is more colloquial than formal.With few long and complicated sentences,it is relatively easy to understand.Translation of the source text will be completed under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory.The difficulties the translator has met with can be classified into three types: translation of interjections,translation of slang and translation of elliptical sentences.Translation methods and strategies to be adopted will include sound translation method,context translation method,paraphrase,idiomatic translation,amplification and conversion.By doing this translation practice,the translator has realized that translation aims to produce to the target readers the same effect as the original text to its readers instead of sticking to the original sentence patterns rigidly.To become a good translator,the translator needs to work hard and accumulate as much experience as possible from every translation practice. |
