At present, scholars are mainly concerned with the ideological and stylistic issues of Old Tales Retold, but rarely analyze it from the perspective of language and illustration. This paper mainl combines literary image theory and iconographic analysis to explore the way of interaction between the text and illustrations of Old Tales Retold, and to provide thoughts on the paths of the literary communication in the age of images in which images carry texts and texts and images complement each other.Based on the comparison of text and illustrations, this paper examines four aspects of illustrations: content, form, quantity, and position: Chapter 1 focuses on the shaping of the text on the content of the illustrations, with the subject matter influencing the tone, the characters becoming the center of gravity, and the plot determining the theme;Chapter 2 analyzes the formal characteristics of the illustrations, with the three pictorial elements of line, color, and composition leading the analysis of the illustration style;Chapter 3 explores the influence of the number of illustrations on the narrative of the images, based on the theory of spatial narrative, and explains the encompassing nature of a single illustration and the successive narrative means of multiple illustrations;Chapter 4 analyzes the three main positions of the illustrations in the text first,in the text, and after the text, and combines them with the influence on the readers to comprehensively explain the aesthetic value, reference value, and communication value of the illustrations on the text. The innovation of this paper is that it unifies the study of the text and illustrations of Old Tales Retold from the perspective of the language-image relationship, and analyzes the methods and characteristics of pictorial representation and text-image complementarity, which have certain reference value for the creation of illustrations and the understanding and dissemination of Lu Xun’s novels.
