| Modernity is the most dynamic theoretical discourse in twentieth Century.Since 1990,Study on literature in the late Qing Dynasty which regarded modernity as a research perspective has become discipline research focus of morder literature.Through investigate mordernity of Journal of the Four novels in Late Qing,the paper attempts to search the unique connotation and significanfour of mordernity of novel magazine,a kind of early form of mass media,and attempts to offer more broad reference for building the new literature history which make modernity as the core.The late Qing Dynasty is the unprecedented turmoil historical period in Chinese history,which had been filled with great division of contradictions between ancient and modern,Chinese and foreign,imperial and opposition parties,Manchu and Han.As part of the culture,Literature performanced and carried these contradictions and crises:Chinese literature finished the transmutation from the ancient tradition of classical studies into the modern form which recognized novel as center,and recognized Western literature as a model.Newspapers and media development in modern capitalism printing technology driven,and quickly became an important carrier of ideological and cultural transformation,and information dissemination channels.Combinated by literature and the media,Novels Journal become new literary form which was full of a unique aesthetic style in late Qing Dynast.It not only changed the mode of transmission of Chinese literature,the propagation velocity,propagation range,but also affect the production and consumption of literature,made literature start to break the shackles of traditional classical literature to construct a new state with a modern quality literature,which influenced by foreign culture stimulation and inspiration,extablished the new literature style with modern quality.The new novel Journal cultivated a new generation of occupation writers and occupation journalists,they actively learned new culture form from western and Japanese,so that the Chinese literary magazine has a clear vision of the world and the rich from the beginning.These literature magazine provide a communication channel for mass novels which producted by literaties,made the novel become the most powerful thought tool which enlightenment thought,reflected social reality,exposed and criticized the darkness of society in twentieth Century the first decade,created China’s early public knowledge space although it is not mature,and made it possible that the women went out the private space and into public space.As the most representative Journal of the Four novels,not only New novel which emphasized the novel’s political enlightenment,Embroidered portrait novel and Monthly All-Story which paid attention to the novel’s critical satire,but also Forest of Novel which pursuited the literary aesthetic function,both published a large number texts,inherited the traditional Chinese novel historical,social,romantic theme,absorbed new literary spirit from foreign literature,create new literature forms with Chinese characteristics inclouded political,science,detective,philosophy,psychology fictions,through a variety of experimental literature,fully demonstrated modern characteristics of literature Journals in the start-up period,and richness as origin of Chinese New Literature of twentieth Century.Besides the introduction,The thesis is divided into seven chapters:On the basis of carding research history and current of the late Qing Dynasty Four novel magazines,the introduction examines the modernity as a concept,explores its intention,the" Chinese" context,and the meaning interpretation which had been presented in the course of Four Fiction Journal’s text and non-text study,simple analysis the missing of the theory and the ambiguous of the meaning,provide the theoretical premise which full of rational understanding for the thesis.The first chapter analysis the cultural context about Journals.The thesis develops analysis the existence of cultural contex from five aspects:political,economy,education,foreign culture and media environment,inclouds some landmark political events,a representative local economy of Shanghai in Late Qing Dynasty,two main kinds of foreign culture:Westem and Japanese,modern publishing and printing industry development and so on.shows the specificity of cultural context,expansives the subsequent discussion on it.The second chapter is "Grand political narrative:New novel’s Modernity",mainly elaborates the New novel’s modernity connotation.It is the first true sense of the novel magazine in Late Qing Dynasty,its modernity is both obvious and rich,its form,Liang Qichao’s press thought and literary ideas,political novel "New Chinese’s Future",pictures,songs and so on.Through analysis from this five respectively aspects,shows New novel’s modernity characteristic which constructied by modern media and literature together.The third chapter is "Strong social criticism:Embroidered portrait novel’s Modernity".Firstly the thesis analysis Li Boyuan as occupation journalist’s special identity and its critique consciousness,on the basis of it,investigates the different social pursuit of Embroidered portrait novel and New novel different,discusses novel’s modernity performance of social fiction novels,science fiction and translated novels,analysis civilization history’s modernity characters,and simple analysis Embroidered portrait ’s unique artistic inheritance and innovation performance,to demonstrate"Embroindered portrait novel’s the unique modern temperament.The fourth chapter is "Rich literature experiment:Monthly All-Story’s Modernity".In the Four novel magazines,Monthly All-Story published the most novels and short stories,which has 113 kinds,it is a "lively" extraordinary magazine.First of paper careful analysis the magazine’s survey and analysis the occupation novelist Wu Jianren’s variety of novel experiment,compares and analysis the translator Zhou Guisheng’s translation novels published in New novel and Monthly All-Story,on the basis of reading of the novel,and discusses Monthly All-Story’s experiment of modern novels.The fifth chapter is "Unique Asthetic pursuit:Forest of Novel’s Modernity".It was the magazine which published the latest,duration the shortest,and published works the least in the Journal of Four Novels in the Qing Danesty.It was incorporated into Journal of the Four novels,because it has a high aesthetic quality.Chief Editor Xu Nianci,writer Huang Ren,and critic Guan common construct aesthetic pursuit,made the Journals abandoned the tool theory thought which could improve society and enlightenment people,rationally changed to emphasize that novel must accord with aesthetic requirements,established the aesthetic character of the late Qing Fiction Magazine.Based on the reading and discussing the novel theory thought of Xu Nianci et al,try to rational reassessment the magazine’s value.The sixth chapter is "The Four novel magazines’s fiction theory and the occurrence of modern Chinese fiction theory".There are a large number of novel theory published in Journal of the Four novels,or a long essay,or "short novel and small talk",all were comment article,for exzample perface,postscript,foreword,the annotation,which explored the novel’s social status,the features,the problems in the course of translation,the morphologies,types of novels,actively participate in the construction of the theoretical system of Chinese novels.Although these theories form still retained the characteristics of Chinese classical literary criticism,but on the basis of inheriting the tradition it has been absorbing the western theory of the novel elements,showing a variety of innovation,make novel creation in the new theory summary and guidance to do various experiments,provided a variety of possible for literature from the classical to modern transition,reflects the novel magazine’s modernity of late Qing Dynasty from one aspect."Concluding remarks".Journal of the four novels in late Qing dynasty in the media sense is also in the literary sense,have shown their fleeting yet eternal feature of modernity,whether it is initial,critical,experimental or aesthetic pursuit,they are not independent,but blend mixed with each other,in different times together show a rich expression of modernity.This richness in the 20th century has not received sufficient attention in the field of academic research,"repressed".Papers in this area of development is both the literary discourse of power to resist,is rich in literary history to modernity at its core. |
