A Study On The Graphical Interpretation Of HSK Abstract Words For Adult Foreign Students

Inspired by the graphic dictionary,this paper explores the picture interpretation of 158 abstract words selected from the new HSK syllabus.In this paper,the definition of abstract words is expanded to include abstract nouns,verbs with abstract meaning,adjectives and so on.The pictures used for interpretation are hand-drawn by the author and on the Internet.The principles of interpretation are “ Simplicity ”,“ Intuitiveness ”,“Consistency”,“Accuracy” and“Artistry”,by analyzing the sample of abstract words,the paper concludes that the methods of picture interpretation of abstract words can be classified into 7 categories and 10 subcategories,they are: symbolic method(typical things symbolic method,expression symbolic method),enumerating method(the next enumerating method,the same level enumerating method),diagram explanation method,the chain diagram display method,the close sense Lenovo law,the opposite sense contrast method(relevance contrast method,independent contrast method),the situation law.In the interpretation practice of abstract nouns,it mainly involves the methods of“Symbolic method”,“Enumeration method”,“Diagram interpretation method”,“Situation method” and so on.Abstract verbs are mostly interpreted in the form of “Serial diagram representation”,“Lenovo Law” and“Situational Law”.Abstract adjectives mainly use the method of“Antonym contrast”.According to the analysis of the correspondence between abstract words and pictures,there are one-to-one,one-to-many,many-to-one relations between abstract words and pictures.It can be seen that the use of pictures is operability to the interpretation of abstract words,but it is not necessarily the only or the best way to interpret words,it varies with the level of learners’ Chinese.
