A Contrastive Analysis Of The English Translation Of Images In Classical Chinese Poems From The Perspective Of Translator’s Subjectivity

English translation of classical Chinese poems is an important part of cultural transmission,the most crucial step of which is to translate the poetic images.In this process,translators’ subjectivity may vary in the translation of the same poetic image because of subjective and objective factors.However,the current discussions combining image translation and translator’s subjectivity are not abundant,and the research method is qualitative mostly.Therefore,this thesis takes ten classical Chinese poems as source texts,chooses the corresponding translations of Xu Yuanchong and Ezra Pound,who are famous in the translation field,and then uses the Zero-shot classification(a deep learning-based text classification technique)to assess the relatedness between the two translated versions and the images in the ten poems.Based on the data obtained by Zero-shot classification,this thesis combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to compare and analyze the display of the two translators’ subjectivity in image translation in different dimensions from factors of translation purpose,cultural and historical background,ideology,and translator’s personal theoretical views.Through the analyses,the following findings are obtained:Xu and Pound mainly use translation methods of preservation,addition,explication,omission,and replacement to present the original images,and the data of these five methods reflect the validity of Zero-shot classification;The main factors influencing Xu’s choices of translation methods are cultural background and translation purpose,while Pound is influenced by cultural and historical backgrounds and personal theoretical views;There is little difference in the overall faithfulness to the images between Xu and Pound,but Xu is better at representing images with a deep cultural background such as characters and tools,while Pound is better at representing scenery,places,and body-related images;In terms of sentiment tendency,the sentiment tendency of Xu’s translation is not prominent,while Pound’s expression of sentiment,especially negative sentiment,is stronger;When dealing with recurring or similar images,there are different treatments in translation between Xu and Pound because of their cultural backgrounds and ideologies.The results confirm that the use of Zero-shot classification can effectively present the display of the translator’s subjectivity in image translation.
