This translation report is based on the author’s translation of the chapters twenty-four and twenty-five of Philip Roth: The Biography written by American biographer Blake Bailey. These two chapters focus on Philip Roth’s novel Portnoy’s Complaint, including the preparation of its publication, the controversy after the publication and its impact on Roth himself and his families and friends.Philip Roth is known as one of the greatest American writers, whose works not only contain a deep analysis of American society, but also include a profound reflection on Jewish culture. The translation of Philip Roth: The Biography is helpful for Chinese readers to get a thorough understanding of Philip Roth himself and the status of his works in the American literary world, which could contribute a lot to the dissemination of literary ideology. The source text belongs to biographical text, the language of which is not only plain and authentic, but also contains some elements of literature.Since the target reader of this translation is the Chinese general public, the purpose of this translation is to let the target readers have an in-depth understanding of Philip Roth and his work.In conclusion, the translator chooses Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theories to guide this practical process and analyze specific translation examples.Newmark’s semantic translation is author-oriented,more faithful to the original text;communicative translation is reader-oriented,focusing on conveying the information in the work and paying much attention to the effect of communication. In the case analysis, the author makes a specific analysis of the application of Newmark’s translation theories and the solution of difficulties from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels.Through this translation practice, the author has benefited a lot and also realized some of his own shortcomings, and mainly obtained the following enlightenment:firstly,it is very important to collect background information before translation, which can help the translator to get a thorough understanding of the original text;secondly, only after long-term accumulation and practice can we improve the ability of language expression and correctly use one language to express the content of another language completely and smoothly. The translator still has a long way to go in enhancing the bilingual competence. And in the future, the translator will work harder, insist on reading and translation practice, striving to be a qualified translator.
