Han Qinhu was a famous general in the Northern Zhou Dynasty and the Sui Dynasty.He performed extraordinary feats and was praised by later generations.The official history of the Sui and Tang Dynasties not only described the military exploits of Han Qinhu "born as the glorious general",but also recorded the occasion of "being a Yama after death";after the Song Dynasty,the image of Han Qinhu in the refined and popular culture was shaped and given new meanings.The characteristics and cultural connotation have formed one of the models of cultural layers.According to official histories such as "Sui Shu" and "Northern History",Han Qinhu was tall and burly,generous,courageous,civil and military,capable of subduing soldiers without fighting.The official biography of Han Qinhu has a positive image in the majority,but it also contains shortcomings such as his greed for fame and lack of military discipline.Tang and later literature used techniques such as "graft" and "synthesis" to form Han Qinhu type into a perfect hero who is young and heroic,has deep literary and military strategy,amazing archery skills,and has both loyalty and righteousness.Han Qinhu in the poems is endowed with the literary connotation of "the change of dynasty".Many poems compare Zhang Lihua and Han Qinhu to reproduce the historical scene of Empress Chen’s debauchery,which was accepted by later generations,forming a pedigree of "Zhang Han’s pairing".Later generations expanded this pedigree,placing Emperor Yang of Sui,Emperor Minghuang of Tang and Wang Yan,the empress of the former Shu,in the "Zhang-Han system",to express the grief of the loss of the country.Han Qinhu’s military skills and prestige are in line with the psychological expectations of the people in the Tang and Song Dynasties,and he was accepted as "the first real king of Yama".Since the Tang and Song Dynasties,the status of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in the underworld has gradually been higher than that of King Yama.Therefore,after Han Qinhu’s death,his story of Yama has not been publicized in literary works,but Han Qinhu’s narrative mode of "becoming Yama after the death" becomes the base of Yama’s narrative in refined and popular culture.
