Jin Shu(《晋书》)was compiled by Fang Xuanling and others in Tang Dynasty on the basis of the eighteen Schools of Jin Shu,which is rich in historical materials and complex in appearance. He Chao made a note for it along with the text, composing Jin Shu Yin Yi(《晋书音义》).Its phonetic interpretation is mainly aimed at the difficult and uncommon characters in Jin Shu,which helps readers to understand the meaning of Jin Shu better, and reflects the phonetic appearance of the Middle Tang Dynasty to a certain extent. It is also an important research material for scholars to investigate the relationship between the sound and meaning of words and phrases in the middle Ages. There are 6777 syllables in Jin Shu Yin Yi:He Chao annotated 6700 syllables(including repetitions),mainly including 4418 Fan-qie(反切),2254 Zhi-yin(直音).He Chao cited a total of 77 entries from 21 people. The dissertation clearly takes He Chao’s annotation material as the main object.Using the method of sound-meaning matching, combined with the internal evidence method and the comparison method, the phonetic transcription materials of He Chao are sorted out one by one.On the basis of returning to the original text, identify and analyze phonetic notation that are not transcribed,so the actual object is clear. The paper draws the following conclusions:1.Summarize the properties of Shou-yin(首音)and You-yin(又音)of He Chao’s annotation. The properties of Shou-yin are:phonetic notation;revealing the original words;revealing different meanings and different pronunciation;revealing different characters and so on.There are four properties of You-yin:phonetic notation;revealing different pronunciation;revealing different characters;revealing different meanings.2.Summarize the nature of the special Yin-qie(音切).Zhi-yin:revealing the original characters;revealing the variant characters.Xie-yun(协韵):rhyme with the context;a kind of Zhi-yin;reflect the voice of the times.Mou-mou-zhi-mou(某某之某)means to determine the specific pronunciation of the annotated character according to the context.Tong-yi-yi-yin(同义异音)are different pronunciations noted by previous records. This paper studies the sound-meaning matching of He Chao’s phonetic annotation materials in Jin Shu Yin Yi,and has achieved certain results in revealing the relationship between the sound and meaning of words in the Middle Ages, but the linguistic value of Jin Shu Yin Yi has yet to be done by further exploration.
