| Business Tips from Wenzhou People,as a narrative text,depicts wisdom of Wenzhou people known as an outstanding business group by means of displaying scores of stories as to how they do business.They have piling performances of fortunate making with indelible business miracles created worldwide.Against the background of implementing the national strategy aimed to improve China’s international communication capability,the book is selected to be rendered into English,which is conducive to telling true Chinese stories to the world and building up a positive image.This translation report is the summary and reflection of the translation activity pivoting on marked causatives in the book.With an eye to emphasizing the initiative taken by Wenzhou people,the source text has adopted abundant causative structures,which are categorized into the following three types:(1)Shi-construction;(2)De-construction;(3)Ba-construction.These types are collectively referred to as marked causatives.After profound consideration on the translation task,the writer concluded that the most intractable difficulty to be solved lies in the dilemma that the translator is susceptible to the shackles of causatives in the presence of such structures,which tends to give rise to difficulties exampled by a lack of language diversity and semantic inappropriateness.They are listed in detail as follows.(1)Lack of language diversity in translating the Shiconstruction;(2)Superfluous causative structure in translating the De-construction;(3)Semantic inappropriateness in translating the Ba-construction.Based on this translation activity,the translator has explored solutions under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida with the intention of coping with conundrums mentioned above.For the main obstacle the translator has encountered in the translation task,namely the translation of marked causatives,the following tactics are feasible.(1)Structural conversion and substitution are two workable manipulations in improving language diversity in translating the Shi-construction;(2)Conveying hidden meaning and simplification come in handy in dealing with the superfluous and lengthy translation of the Deconstruction;(3)Semantic inappropriateness in translating the Ba-construction can be solved with the help of conversion of part of speech and conveying hidden meaning.Currently,a great number of scholars pay most heed to a specific “X” construction with causative meaning while there are a few studies on marked causatives including three constructions in comparison,let along those with the Functional Equivalence Theory involved.Therefore,hopefully this report will contribute to deepening the theoretical richness of researches on marked causatives and bear referential significance to translation activities pertaining to marked causatives. |
