The study, taking some of the culture-loaded words from the novel Half a Lifelong Romance(Ban Sheng Yuan)written by Zhang Ailing as the data for case analysis, intends to firstly study the categorization and characteristics of the culture-loaded words in the source-language novel, and then analyze the English translation methods of the culture-loaded words by the American Sinologist Karan Kingsbury, based on the cultural schema theory.Research findings are as follows: The culture-loaded words in the novel Half a Lifelong Romance(Ban Sheng Yuan)can be put into ecological, material, linguistic, social and religious categories, among which the material, linguistic and social culture-loaded words account for a much larger number, and these culture-loaded words have three obvious characteristics of being local, national and allusive.Different English translation methods for the culture-loaded words therein are adopted by Karan Kingsbury according to the different circumstances. In the case of cultural scheme correspondence, literal translation and free translation are mainly adopted;in the case of cultural schema conflict, literal translation and free translation are mainly employed;and in the case of cultural schema default, literal translation, free translation, omission, literal translation plus free translation are mainly used, supplemented by a variety of translation methods, such as transliteration plus annotation, literal translation plus annotation and amplification plus literal translation. It is hoped that this study can shed light on the translation research and practice of Chinese culture-loaded words and Chinese literary works, meanwhile promoting the “going global” of Chinese culture. |
