| China’s long history has nurtured a unique system of official system.When translating traditional Chinese classics,the translation of official titles and institutions is inevitable.However,it is difficult to find the translation equivalents of Chinese official titles and institutions in English.Therefore,English translation of ancient Chinese official titles and institutions has certain academic research value and practical significance.This study takes the ancient Chinese official titles and institutions in the English translation of Brush Talks From Dreamed Brook of the Library of Chinese Classics project as the research material,and uses the theory of translation compensation to analyze the English translation methods of ancient Chinese official titles and institutions.The results show that on the basis of being faithful to the original text,the English translation of ancient Chinese titles and institutions in Brush Talks From Dreamed Brook has the characteristics of simplicity,fluency and strong readability.Translators use the following translation methods to translate ancient Chinese official titles and institutions: transliteration plus annotation,literal translation,combination of transliteration and literal translation,free translation,combination of transliteration and free translation,and explanatory translation.Meanwhile,translators flexibly use methods of compensation by integration,such as amplification,specification and generalization,and methods of compensation by isolation,such as annotation within text and annotation outside text,which alleviate the reading difficulties of target language readers by compensating the missing cultural connotation of the original text.It is hoped that this study can provide some reference for the English translation of ancient Chinese official titles and institutions,the translation research and practice of ancient Chinese classics. |
