A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of In-Prepositional Phrases In Shipping Conferences (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

The report selects the first two chapters of B.M.Deakin’s work Shipping Conferences for translation.As an informative text in the field of shipping,it studies the origin of conference at the end of the 19 th century,the operation mode and development status of each route,especially focuses on the formation of freight rates,price trends and some economic profits and financial situation of members from the perspective of economics.Briefly speaking,a lot of data and economic models are used to reveal the mystery of shipping conference for us.The report first sorts out prepositional phrases,and summarizes the syntactic functions of in-prepositional phrases with examples,including post-modifiers,complements,subjects,adverbs,etc.On this basis,according to the characteristics of the text,the Newmark’s communicative translation is used as the theoretical guide,and the translation methods and techniques of in-prepositional phrases are summarized in view of the problems encountered in the translation process: at the lexical level,the content of the source language is guaranteed to be highly faithful to the original text through materialization,addition,omission and conversion,enhancing interaction between the author and the reader and minimize the reading disorder caused by the reader’s shortage of professional knowledge;at the syntactic level,the translation is more in line with Chinese logic and expression habits through inversion and expansion,avoiding information unequivalence caused by the difference between Chinese and English prepositional phrases;at the semantic level,optimizing the selection of words and meanings in translation process through literal translation and free translation to avoid the rigidity of the translation,etc.The report ends up with a summary and some insights on the translation process:communicative translation focuses on the understanding and response of target language readers and the transmission effect of the original text,which is of guiding and reference significance for the English-Chinese translation of in-prepositional phrases in informative texts in the field of shipping.
